Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

My husband and I have a passion for exploring stunning locations to admire the vibrant colors of fall foliage, and we believe that autumn is the perfect time to visit the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. This remarkable preserve has a rich and captivating history that traces back to the era of prehistoric Native American inhabitants. It played a pivotal role in the early industrial development of Alabama during its early statehood, all thanks to the visionary efforts of entrepreneur and industrialist David Hanby. The Hanby family was instrumental in the area, operating a grist mill and a small iron forge on the banks of Turkey Creek. Tragically, David Hanby’s life was cut short when Union Soldiers killed him on April 19, 1865, but his legacy continues to thrive through the preserve.

The Turkey Creek Nature Preserve offers an extensive network of 6.23 miles of trails that guide hikers through the distinct and captivating features of the area. These five trails lead adventurers along the picturesque Turkey Creek and across a small hill on the creek’s west side. Access to these trails is available from various points along Turkey Creek Road in Pinson, Alabama.

Beyond its historical significance and breathtaking scenery, the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Alabama is home to a diverse array of biologically unique habitats. The waters of Turkey Creek serve as the dwelling place for three endangered species of fish, namely the Vermilion Darter, the Watercress Darter, and the Rush Darter. Of particular note, the Vermilion Darter is an exclusive inhabitant of Turkey Creek and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Moreover, the preserve provides sanctuary to several threatened and endangered species, including the long-eared bat, grey bat, flattened musk turtle, and eared coneflower. In total, the preserve is a haven for seven protected species, solidifying its status as one of the most crucial habitats for rare and endangered species in the country. Simply driving through the park is an absolute feast for the eyes, offering a profound connection with nature and history that is truly unparalleled.
