The Helpful Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is touted to be one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. And green tea polyphenols have been associated with many diverse health benefits. In the brain, green tea appears to offer neuroprotective effects and may shield the brain from cognitive decline by boosting the creation of new brain cells and neural connections. Green tea also reduces the risk for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. One study found that Parkinson’s disease risk was reduced by 26% for every two cups per day of tea consumed, and one meta-analysis found that the rate of cognitive disorders was 35% lower in people who regularly drank tea.

More studies are finding that compounds found in green tea are beneficial as they appear to bolster and protect brain health by improving mental function and elevating mental focus. There are other potential health benefits being found through research as well. Some of them have concluded that drinking green tea decreases your risk of death from many other diseases, such as heart disease. It may ward off some effects of aging, improve some people’s mood, help to reduce psychological stress, including feelings of anxiety and depression, and lead to a feeling of calmness. Green tea drinkers have even been found to score higher on some tests.

Green tea contains a type of polyphenol called catechin. Catechins are antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and provide other health benefits. While the evidence is mixed and inconsistent, some research has even linked drinking green tea with a reduced chance of developing some types of cancer; however, more research is still needed. Most research does show that the more cups you drink, the better the benefit, but just remember that the beverage does contain caffeine, and if you are sensitive, you should still watch your intake. You may want to consider making green tea a regular part of your lifestyle in a way that meets your personal health goals and taste preferences. It is certainly a great addition to any personal Self-Care routine because even without the health benefits, it is still a warm and cozy way to curl up and care for yourself.
