Oahu Hawaii-Things to do

We arrived in Wakkaki, HI, at midnight after a long day of travel. We had a lot of plans scheduled on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. So we were a little tired when we took off the following day for an Oahu Whale-Watching Excursion. The cruise was very scenic, with fabulous views of diamond head, and we caught sight of a few whales.

That evening, we attended a luau at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. The performances were exciting and beautiful.

The next morning we decided to drive to the other side of the island to Sunset Beach. The weather was typical for Hawaii. Sunny and mild. We watched surfers and sat on the beach.

We then drove down Highway 83 to Kualoa Ranch. This tourist attraction offers tours and adventures, from walking tours to tours on horseback. We chose the Hollywood Movie Sites and Ranch Tour. This tour is by bus, and they take you around the Ranch and point out all the movie filming sites—movies from Jurassic Park to Jumanji and King Kong. This is a must-see for all ages.

We try to include at least a hike per vacation trip. We decided to hike up to the top of Diamond Head on this trip. This hike is moderately strenuous, with a flight of stairs at the top. But the view is worth it.

One site we visited on our trip was the Byodo-in Temple. The temple was built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The koi pond here is mesmerizing.

And, of course, no trip to Oahu is complete without a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Park. We toured a submarine and a ship and took a boat ride out to see the underwater USS Arizona Memorial. Plan for a whole day because there are many museums and shops to see here.
