LuLu’s -Gulf Shores, Alabama

My grandma would often tell me stories about when she used to babysit Jimmy Buffet, and I thought, “OK, Alrighty, Sure you did!”. Fast track to the present. I was Keeping It Local and visiting one of my favorite Gulf Shores Restaurants, none other than the famous LuLu’s. I have been there many times. There are pictures on the wall, just past the hostess stand, that I pass by every time, but I never really paid them any attention. But one day, I stopped and smelled the pictures, should I say, and there she was, MY AUNT KAT, hanging on the wall there in MS. Lucy’s place. And if I had not been recently looking through my Meemaw’s old pictures, I never would have recognized her there. In the old black and white photo, I saw her happy and smiling. There she was, young, and she was having a great time on the water, just taking a boat ride with her friends. “The Buffet Ladies on the Sea”, the picture read, Ship Island, Mississippi. Well, I’ll be darn, she was telling me the truth. She was right there to prove it, and she must have meant just as much to Ms. Lucy Buffett as she did to me.

The restaurant is such a great place to go and spend some time. My favorite thing about the place is, of course, the food, but I also go for the view. I just adore sitting there on the canal watching the boats float by or the barge workers passing their time while carrying a delivery downstream. The sunlight does wonders on my psyche as well. You might even see a dolphin or two if you are lucky. LuLu’s at Homeport Marina is Ms. Lucy’s little miracle, according to her YouTube video. A place where she cooks up her childhood memories and her Gulf Coast favorites.

What started off on Weeks Bay as LuLu’s Sunset Grille, a simple Bait shop near Fish River, has become a place to unwind, have fun, sing, dance, enjoy snow cones and Ropes Courses. Kids love the arcade there as well. Jimmy Buffet has also been known to show up there unannounced and just start playing. Let us get to the food. This time, our crew enjoyed the crab claw entrée. It came with Cole slaw, French fries, and hushpuppies. And we had the Greek Salad with grilled shrimp and a side of Fried Green tomatoes. Lulu’s has the best onion rings, so we added that to our meal to share. We finished off our meal with the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding. Bread pudding with a twist! I saw them bringing in the Krispy Kreme doughnuts to make this one, and that was actually very exciting! We found the service to be spectacular.

We visited Lulu’s in Gulf Shores, Alabama, but please visit their website for other locations. And for more Keeping it Local, please follow our blog.
