    Benefits of Strength Training

Strength training is a form of exercise that aims to enhance muscular strength, enabling the body to perform everyday activities easily, preventing injuries, and promoting overall health. Examples of strength training exercises include push-ups, pull-ups, and weightlifting. Incorporating strength training is the way to go if you want to decrease body fat, boost lean muscle mass, and improve calorie-burning efficiency. It’s an essential aspect of overall health and fitness for people of all ages. As you age, your body’s lean muscle mass naturally decreases. If you don’t take any action to replace this lost muscle, your body fat percentage will increase over time. However, strength training can help you maintain…

    Yoga Essentials

As I start my fitness journey, yoga is one of the practices that I have started to increase my strength and flexibility. I first started by taking classes at my fitness club. We have all seen pictures of beautiful and fit people doing yoga. Well, that is not reality. Yoga classes consist of people of all shapes, sizes, and ages. You do not have to be flexible to start. You will become more flexible as you continue your practice. Isn’t that one of the reasons you started? I have a friend who just turned eighty, and she is still very flexible after years of yoga. Most yoga studios provide the…

    Walking 10,000 Steps per Day

As Kathleen and I continued our fitness journey, I ran across the 10,000 steps a day challenge, so I decided to try it. The challenge is walking 10,000 steps per day, whether outside or on a treadmill, whatever the weather. The focus of the challenge isn’t on speed or pace but on moving your body and getting some daily exercise. I have set the length of time as 30 days.  First, I wanted to know how far the 10,000 steps were; it turns out it is about 5 miles, depending on your stride. Most people walk with a stride length of approximately 2.1 to 2.5 feet, so it would take…

What is meditation, will it benefit me?

If mindfulness is being in the moment, then meditation is being deeply in the moment. An old Zen saying suggests, “You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes every day — unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.”There are many forms of meditation. You might be asking yourself, which one is right for me? I have been asking myself this question and learning more about meditation through my continuing education studies and by using the CALM app, which I added to my phone.Meditation is a technique that has been used for thousands of years to develop an awareness of the present moment. The practice helps to…

Yoga Poses that Relieve Back Pain

Tight, tense back muscles can lead to muscle strain and poor posture. When your muscles aren’t tense, there’s usually less stress and pressure on certain parts of your body and, as a result, less pain in your back, neck, and shoulders. If you have chronic lower back pain, especially in your spine, it’s always essential to start any movement program slowly and carefully, using your own pain signals as a guide for your limits. When you exercise or do yoga to treat your lower back pain, start slowly and pay attention to how you feel while doing each pose. If pain increases while you are doing a pose, you should stop…

Yoga Poses That Improve Balance and Stability

What is the Difference between Balance and Stability? Balance refers to our ability to control our bodies against the forces of gravity while keeping ourselves still. On the other hand, stability refers to our ability to keep our bodies under control even while in motion. Yoga helps with both of these. Improving balance and stability decreases the risk of falls that lead to injuries.  1. Tadasana: Mountain Pose Instructions Step 1 Stand with your big toes touching, heels slightly apart. Or, for more stability, stand with feet parallel, hip-width apart. Choose the option that feels better for you. Step 2 Take a moment to feel the soles of your feet…

Yoga Poses that Help Manage Stress

Yoga is sometimes referred to as moving meditation. Yoga is especially helpful with stress relief due to meditation, controlled breathing, stretching asanas, and mental imagery. It reduces anxiety and depression and, thus, helps manage stress. Yoga helps in the body’s production of Endorphins. Endorphins play an important role in managing negative emotions and physical pain. These hormones are important for your physical and emotional well-being. Also, when tension is released in your muscles, it may help you feel more relaxed. In turn, that may lower your stress levels.  1. Sukhasana: Easy Pose Instructions Step 1 Place a yoga blanket folded to about two hands long and one hand wide on your…
